On February 20th, 42 Der Sitzmark Ski Club members headed out for a week of skiing fun and adventure in Snowmass, Colorado. The weather was very cooperative and It was a great day for traveling into Aspen/Snowmass. It was nice getting off the bus to see that the accommodations were very attractive with a peaceful wooded setting and panoramic views of Snowmass Mountain and Mt. Daly. Once settled and unpacked, the group enjoyed a Wine and Cheese Reception and information session at the Welcome Center at The Villas at Snowmass Club.
The ski week started with two bluebird ski days which allowed the group to comfortably acquaint themselves with the 3000 acres of terrain and multiple mountain lodges and options for taking breaks and eating lunch. Many of the ski club members spent part of their first day on a complimentary mountain tour offered by knowledgeable Snowmass volunteers. A bonus for skiers on day one was to enjoy a “noon groom” on Long Shot, the longest slope on the mountain! Resort insiders noted that this only happens once a year! This required a 15 minute hike up to the head of the trail from Two Creek lifts and the view from 11,325 ft. of the Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak (14,000 sq ft) was worth every step! All felt accomplished for making the effort and enjoyed a 5.3 mile smooth decent!
The weather changed to bring in fresh new snow with reported 15″ in two days. A small group of skiers took advantage of “First Tracks” in cooperation with Snowmass Ski School. Skiers took to the top of the mountain an hour and half prior to official opening. Heading out in heavy snow squalls, when the weather quickly changed the group skied intermediate terrain and fresh tracks were well worth the early start!
Many of the group also enjoyed the opportunity to ski and visit Aspen and Buttermilk which was made easy with a great system of shuttles and pass options. The 19,000 sq. ft. Club at Snowmass was the perfect facility for skier and non-skiers and was a great place to catch up in the hot tub after long ski day – they also offered the best fresh baked cookies in the late afternoon! Those not skiing had plenty to do including activities at the Club, eating and shopping at Snowmass Village or Aspen, walks on the property, and much more.
The trip was wrapped up with the customary group dinner on the last night hosted at one of the villa condominiums. It was an amazing spread of appetizers, soups, main dishes, salads, deserts, and lots of wine! The overall opinion was that most would return to Snowmass and that the Villas at Snowmass Club were well worth a repeat visit too.
