Minutes of Meeting – February 20, 2024

Dot Easter presented information on the 77th Annual Pennsylvania Maple Festival to be held in April in Meyersdale, Pa.  There was no interest from our club members for this event.

There was a brief discussion regarding changing our club’s name.  Libby Murphy mentioned that the newsletter has a brief line on the front page “Join us and make the best of all seasons.”  Also, on the renewal sheet it states that we are a year-round social/sports/ski club providing a variety of activities for its members.

As of this date, there is still no Vice President.

New Ski Trip Leader

Patty Ann will be stepping down after the Telluride trip.  Mary Sauer has agreed to lead next year’s trip and details will be sent separately after all the arrangements have been worked out.  Thank you Mary for taking this on and a big thank you to Patty Ann for being the ski trip leader for the past few years.  You did a great job.

TELLURIDE SKI TRIP RECAP – Patty Ann McLaughlin

The DSSC 2024 Ski Trip to Telluride, Colorado may have been a small group of just 16, but we hit the mountains with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. Telluride is the quintessential ski town, grown out of the old west charm of cowboys, mining, stage coaches, and a less complicated time in history. The town is cradled in the valley of the San Juan Mountains surrounded by slopes laden with Pine trees and Aspen and peaks of beautiful snow. The ski terrain of the resort is as varied as the paint colors of the clapboard cottages lining the streets of the town.

We stayed at the Mountain Lodge, a mountainside retreat just a gondola ride from Telluride Ski Resort and down to the town. The main lodge offered a rustic restaurant around a massive two story stone fireplace, a heated outdoor pool, and hot tubs. We had a very personal and informative Welcome Reception with wine, beer, and ample charcuterie with local insights from the resort manager. The condos were very cozy with everything we needed including fireplaces and the luxury and convenience of main floor security lockers and ski-in/ski-out location.

The weather was extremely cooperative with one day of colder temperatures, blowing cold, and snow accumulation. It was winter time! This was followed by a string of those incredible desirable Colorado bluebird days coupled with silky groomers – it was incredible. With the smaller group, we did meet up for some group skiing experiences, touring the epic mountain, soaks in the hot tubs, and of course, the annual last night smorgasbord. Kudos to Bob Scullion for hosting and for Chef Allen and his creations. What fun!

The destination, the weather, and most importantly the enthusiastic group made this a very memorable trip. We had some grandchildren on the trip who took part in ski lessons and had a blast enjoying some of the best skiing of their lives – so far. There is something about skiing with a group of like-minded people that makes the time on the snow so very enjoyable.

Thank you to those that came on the trip and accommodated the flights and travel to and from Montrose without me. I was happy to see all your smiling faces on arrival and sad to say “Goodbye” as we departed.  And thank you Telluride – what a place!

WPSC – Judy Neyer

Council had a Zoom meeting.

Both council trips were successful.  The Killington trip especially so.  The Banff trip had three injuries, but all involved had taken out trip insurance.

The Killington trip will be repeated again next January.

The western trip will either be Whitefish, Montana or Fernie BC, Canada, usually late February or early March.  Out west trip fills up fast. Both of these mountains are independent so no Ikon or Epic passes.  Der Sitzmark has gone to Whitefish in the past.

WPSC’- trips should be posted on their website in June – wpaskicouncil.com.  As a club council members, you are able to participate in these trips at no additional charge.

You can also join other clubs’ trips.  Last year’s trips:

Erie – Marmot Basin, Canada.  This tip was piggybacked into council’s trip to Banff.  This has happened the last few years.  Marmot and Banff – Ikon mountains

West Moreland – Crested Butte, CO – Epic pass

Mon Valley – Breckinridge – Epic pass

Pittsburgh Ski Club – Big Skye, Copper, Banff, Grindelwald, Switzerland – All Ikon pass

Pittsburgh Ski Club requires you to be a member to go on their trips.  $25 – single; $15 for another adult in the same household

The other clubs may also require a membership fee.

Jim Kapp Scholarship was awarded to two people:

10 year old mogul skier Gunnar Respect

17 year old mogul skier Cate Langer

I have their request write ups available to anyone who would like to read them.
