A group of us joined Bill King on September 18 for a bus tour to the Johnstown Flood Museum. It was a perfect day for an outing, and everyone came away with a much better appreciation of this disaster. We started off in downtown Johnstown at the flood museum where an excellent docent told the story with help from a diorama showing the route of the disaster from the burst dam down to the town. We then traveled about 12 miles to the site of the South Fork Dam to see where it broke and emptied out the lake. Then we strolled down 40 feet into the valley that remains. A highlight was lunch at Rizzo’s Restaurant with a 6-course meal that was more dinner than lunch, truly no one needed to have dinner that evening! We ended our day with a tour of the neighborhood above the Conemaugh River and a ride down the Inclined Plane (similar to our inclines but large enough to hold cars.) A big thank you to Bill for organizing this trip. It was a 5-star experience!
